Those three words …

… Are said too much. They’re not enough. — Snow Patrol

There’s nothing like sharing a moment of weakness with someone to help you see straight into their soul, all the while exposing your own.

Hearing an unexpected “I love you” while you’re trying hard to hide your feelings — trying hard to appear strong and indifferent —  can disarm you completely, leaving your heart naked and your tongue tied.

If it comes during a telephone conversation, you can almost hear the smile on the other end of the phone as you struggle to recapture your composure.

It’s not just “I love you.”  It’s …

“I understand you. I accept you. I don’t like to see you hurting. I need you in my life. I don’t want you to change. Despite everything, I wouldn’t change a thing in this amazing ride we’re on right now.”

It’s all that and so much more.

And it hits you right away.

You just caught someone stripped of their guard, heart open, honesty exposed, vulnerability at maximum level.  And you want nothing more than to accept the invitation to release your fears into the warm embrace of the unknown.

It’s moments like these that, in an instant, peel away the layers of bullshit we hide behind and help us touch each other at the very core.  Moments when our souls catch a glimpse of eternity and the possibilities it offers us right here in this very life.  Moments when we climb out of the box in which we shelter ourselves and dare to live outside its walls.

We spend so much energy protecting ourselves from the monsters that live within.  It’s amazing how easy it is to tame those monsters with just three words.

“I love you.”

Sometimes those three words are not enough.

But sometimes … they are.
